Overview

Jeju, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, is Korea's favourite holiday island – a place of black lava rock, emerald craters, tangerine groves and turquoise coves. On this short but varied tour you watch the sunrise from the rim of the Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone, cycle around the little island of Udo and walk through one of the world's longest lava tubes.

The sporting highlight is the ascent of Hallasan, at 1,947 metres South Korea's highest mountain, with its crater lake Baengnokdam. Along the way you will meet the haenyeo, the island's famous women divers who still harvest shellfish without breathing equipment, and discover the waterfalls and basalt columns of the south coast around Seogwipo.

Itinerary · Day by day

  1. Day1
    Arrival on Jeju

Arrival at Jeju International Airport, where your guide meets you. We start with Yongduam, the 'Dragon Head Rock' shaped by lava and waves, and stroll through Dongmun Market to taste Jeju tangerines and hallabong. Welcome dinner with the island's speciality, grilled Jeju black pork.

Dinner 4* hotel in Jeju City
  2. Day2
Lava tubes and the island of Udo

We walk through Manjanggul, a lava tube several kilometres long with a 7.6-metre lava column at its end. At the Haenyeo Museum we learn about the island's women divers, then take the ferry to Udo, where we cycle past stone walls, peanut fields and the white coral sand of Seobin Baeksa beach. Overnight in Seongsan, right at the foot of the crater.

Breakfast, lunch 4* hotel in Seongsan
  3. Day3
    Sunrise Peak and the haenyeo

Early risers climb Seongsan Ilchulbong – 'Sunrise Peak' – in about 25 minutes to watch the sun rise over the sea from the rim of the vast crater. Later we watch a performance by the haenyeo divers at the foot of the cone, walk along the cliffs of Seopjikoji and visit the thatched stone houses of Seongeup Folk Village. In the afternoon we drive to Seogwipo and see the Jeongbang Waterfall, which plunges directly into the sea.

    Breakfast 4* hotel in Seogwipo
  4. Day4
    Ascent of Hallasan

At dawn we set off on the Seongpanak trail through forests of Korean fir and azalea meadows to the 1,947-metre summit of Hallasan and its crater lake Baengnokdam. We descend via the steeper, scenic Gwaneumsa trail with views of deep valleys. Those who prefer a gentler day can hike the Eorimok trail to the Witse-oreum plateau instead. In the evening we celebrate with a farewell dinner of fresh seafood.

Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner 4* hotel in Seogwipo
  5. Day5
    Waterfalls and departure

A relaxed final morning: we walk through the subtropical gorge to Cheonjiyeon Waterfall and marvel at the hexagonal basalt columns of Jusangjeolli along the coast. Depending on your flight time, we stop at a tangerine farm or an O'sulloc tea field on the way to Jeju International Airport.

Important notes

  • Citizens of the EU and many other countries enter South Korea visa-free for up to 90 days, Russian citizens for up to 60 days; depending on nationality an online K-ETA travel authorization may be required – we will advise on the current rules when you book.
  • Most guests reach Jeju via Seoul – domestic flights take about one hour and run many times a day; we are happy to book them for you.
  • The Hallasan summit hike (Seongpanak – Gwaneumsa, about 19 km, 8–9 hours) requires good fitness; trails close to summit climbers from around midday, so we start at dawn. An easier alternative via the Eorimok trail is always available.
  • Hallasan summit trails require a named advance reservation – please send us your passport details at least 4 weeks before departure.
  • The Udo ferry and haenyeo demonstrations depend on sea conditions; Manjanggul is occasionally closed for conservation work, in which case we visit another lava cave.
  • Bring hiking boots, a windproof jacket and layers – it can be 10–15 °C colder on the summit than on the coast.
