When to Visit Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan through the seasons: the best time for yurt stays, trekking, Issyk-Kul, city trips and winter skiing.

Kyrgyzstan has a continental climate with warm, sunny summers and cold winters. Because of the big differences in altitude, the weather in the mountains can be very different from the weather in Bishkek on the same day. The right season depends on what you want to do.

Summer: June to early September

The main travel season. The high pastures are green, herding families live in yurts on the jailoo and most mountain roads and passes are open. This is the time for Son-Kul (usually accessible from mid-June to mid-September), horse riding, trekking near Karakol and swimming in Issyk-Kul (the water is warmest in July and August). Bishkek and the lowlands can be hot, while nights in the mountains are cool or cold. July and August are the busiest months – send your request early.

Spring: April and May

The valleys turn green and fruit trees blossom, but higher passes are often still under snow. Spring is a good time for day trips from Bishkek, the Burana Tower, canyons and a first look at Issyk-Kul, with few visitors. Weather can be changeable, with rain showers.

Autumn: mid-September to October

Clear skies, golden colours and fewer people. Early autumn is still good for most tours; from October nights in the mountains become frosty and yurt camps at Son-Kul close. Autumn is excellent for Issyk-Kul, Karakol, canyons and cultural trips.

Winter: December to March

Cold and snowy in the mountains, with bright sunny days. The ski season in Karakol usually runs in this period, depending on snowfall, and hot springs near Karakol are a welcome break. Issyk-Kul does not freeze. High pastures, Son-Kul and most treks are not accessible.
