Destinations in Kyrgyzstan

An overview of Kyrgyzstan's main regions – Bishkek and the Chuy valley, Issyk-Kul, Son-Kul and Naryn, and the south – with tours for each.

Kyrgyzstan is compact, but its regions are very different: a green capital at the foot of snowy peaks, a huge mountain lake, high pastures with yurts and the ancient Silk Road towns of the south. Here is an overview to help you choose.

Bishkek and the Chuy valley

Most journeys begin in Bishkek, a relaxed city of parks and wide boulevards. Within an hour or two you reach Ala-Archa National Park with its glaciers and hiking trails, the Burana Tower from the 11th century and the red-rock canyons near the Boom Gorge. Perfect for day trips on arrival or departure.

Issyk-Kul and Karakol

Issyk-Kul, the great mountain lake that does not freeze in winter, is the heart of Kyrgyz tourism. The north shore has beaches and the petroglyphs of Cholpon-Ata; the quieter south shore is known for Skazka canyon, eagle hunters and felt-makers. Karakol in the east is the base for Jeti-Oguz, treks to Ala-Kul and Altyn-Arashan, and skiing in winter.

Son-Kul and Naryn

Son-Kul, a high-altitude lake at about 3,000 m, is the place to experience nomadic summer life: herds on endless pastures, yurt camps and starry nights. It can be reached by car or on horseback. Further south, the Naryn region is home to the stone caravanserai of Tash-Rabat on an old Silk Road route towards China.

The south: Osh, Arslanbob and the Alay

Osh is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, with the sacred mountain Sulaiman-Too and a lively bazaar. The village of Arslanbob lies among huge walnut forests, and the Alay valley offers views of the Pamir. The south is best combined into a longer trip or reached by a domestic flight – ask us for a tailor-made itinerary.
