Classic Silk Road: Samarkand, Bukhara & Khiva
Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva
Eight days through the three legendary oasis cities of the Silk Road, with the Afrosiyob high-speed train, a desert crossing and sunset over the walls of Khiva.
Route: Tashkent → Samarkand → Bukhara → Tashkent (by Afrosiyob train)
Short on time but eager to see the Silk Road's greatest monuments? This compact tour covers the essentials without rushing. Fast Afrosiyob trains connect Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara, so you spend your days among turquoise domes rather than on the road.
In Samarkand you stand before the Registan, walk through the necropolis of Shah-i-Zinda and visit Tamerlane's tomb; in Bukhara you explore the Ark fortress, the Kalyan Minaret and the atmospheric trading domes. Ideal as a long weekend, a first taste of Central Asia or an add-on to a trip to neighbouring countries.
Your guide welcomes you at Tashkent airport. In the afternoon, discover the capital's highlights: the Khast Imam complex with its ancient Qur'an, the bustling Chorsu Bazaar, Amir Timur Square and the white marble Minor Mosque. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
Take the early Afrosiyob train to Samarkand, arriving in just over two hours. Admire the Registan and its three madrasas, visit the gilded interior of Gur-e-Amir and the colossal Bibi-Khanym Mosque, then taste fresh Samarkand bread at the Siab Bazaar. Return to the Registan in the evening for the illuminated view.
In the soft morning light, walk the avenue of mausoleums at Shah-i-Zinda and visit Ulugh Beg's Observatory. After lunch, the Afrosiyob train takes you to Bukhara in about ninety minutes. End the day with dinner beside the Lyab-i Hauz pool, framed by old madrasas and mulberry trees.
A full day in Bukhara's car-free old town: the Samanid Mausoleum, the Bolo Hauz Mosque and the Ark fortress of the emirs. At the Poi Kalyan ensemble, the 12th-century Kalyan Minaret towers above the square, while the trading domes nearby invite you to shop for silk, carpets and hand-forged knives. The late afternoon is free to explore at your own pace.
After breakfast, board the Afrosiyob train back to Tashkent (about four hours). On arrival, you are transferred to Tashkent International Airport for your onward flight; on request, departure can also be arranged directly from Bukhara airport.
